Smartphone or tablet
Seestar app installed
Bluetooth/Wi-Fi enabled
Charged Seestar
Note: The screenshots in this tutorial were captured using the Seestar app on an iPhone. The Android version of the app may look slightly different, but the overall setup process should be similar.
The Seestar app must be installed on a compatible Android or iOS mobile device. Before beginning, I recommend enabling Bluetooth and granting the Seestar app the necessary permissions. Otherwise, some steps may fail and the app may ask you to enable these permissions later.
Android
Go to Settings -> Apps -> Seestar -> Permissions and check the following permissions:
Location
Files and media - if you want processed images saved to your phone
Bluetooth - you may also be prompted to enable this from within the Seestar app
iOS
Go to Settings -> Apps -> Seestar and check:
Location
Photos - if you want processed images saved to your phone
Bluetooth
If you would like to create a Seestar account, including the ability to share images through the app, select Me in the lower-right corner of the app and then select Log In.
Select Create Account at the bottom of the screen. You can then create an account using your mobile phone number or email address and a password.
Press and hold the power button on the lower front of the Seestar S30 Pro for approximately 3 seconds.
The indicator light will illuminate. If your Seestar is using its default Alt/Az configuration, the light should appear orange.
Give the Seestar a few moments to finish starting. It is now ready to connect to the Seestar app on your mobile device.
During the initial setup, the Seestar app may notify you that a firmware update is available. If an update is requested, select Update Now.
The firmware will first be transferred to your Seestar. The firmware installation will then begin.
Important: Do not turn off the Seestar while the firmware is being updated.
If the firmware update appears to remain at 99% and you hear the Seestar restarting, give it at least 5 minutes to finish.
If the app still displays 99% after waiting, close and restart the Seestar app on your phone. There should be no need to restart the Seestar itself if the telescope has already restarted as part of the firmware update.
My experience: I have encountered the firmware update appearing to remain at 99% on at least two occasions. Waiting an additional five minutes before restarting the mobile app is simply an extra precaution I use to make sure the Seestar has had enough time to finish its update and restart.
Select the Seestar icon in the lower-right corner of the app, and then select Connect.
Select Connect again when prompted to connect to the Seestar's local Wi-Fi network. The network name should resemble S30 Pro_*.
Enable any additional permissions requested by the app.
When instructed by the app, press the button underneath the front of the Seestar for approximately 1 second.
The app will begin attempting to connect to the Seestar's Wi-Fi network.
When your phone asks for permission to join the Seestar's Wi-Fi network, select Join.
Once connected, your phone and the Seestar can communicate directly through the telescope's Wi-Fi connection.
After connecting to your Seestar for the first time, the app will prompt you to change its Wi-Fi password. You can also change the Seestar's Wi-Fi network name if desired.
If you want to change these settings later, select Me from the lower-right menu and then select Device Management.
Select Modify.
Choose the Wi-Fi band you would like to use:
2.4 GHz — provides greater range but generally lower connection speeds.
5 GHz — provides higher connection speeds but generally has a shorter range.
You can also:
Change the Seestar Wi-Fi network name, if desired.
Enter a new Wi-Fi password.
When finished, select Done.
The Seestar S30 Pro supports NFC, which can make reconnecting your phone to the telescope easier. During the initial setup, the app may ask you to update the NFC connection information.
Select Update NFC.
Follow the instructions displayed in the Seestar app. When prompted, hold the top rear portion of your iPhone close to the upper front surface of the Seestar S30 Pro.
Keep the phone in position until the app confirms that the NFC update has completed successfully.
Once the process is complete, your Seestar S30 Pro is connected and ready to use.
Clear skies!
